Who we are?

The Story Behind Our Name

The story of 23 Society Espresso Bar began in 2023, when we decided to redesign our former cafe, Rod. Our door number 23 was the first source of inspiration. But what truly motivated us was the warmth of our neighborhood. The sense of belonging we felt led us to add “society” to our name, reflecting the spirit of community we wanted to create.

A Design from the Heart

Every corner of our cafe was fully designed and built by us. Inspired by our favorite coffee shops discovered during our travels, we aimed to create a small, cozy space where others could find the same sense of calm that we were looking for. Most of our materials were carefully selected from second-hand shops; we repaired and restored each piece by hand. Our goal was to preserve a vintage feel while reflecting the spirit of Kadıköy in the space.

What Happens Here?

This is not just a place to drink coffee. It’s a space where quick espresso breaks turn into warm conversations and meaningful, shareable moments. We hope to nurture a culture of regulars and connection.

What We Believe In

With a strong commitment to sustainability, community, and supporting small businesses, we invite you to be a part of this experience with us.

There’s one name behind everything at 23 Society Espresso Bar: Emre Koca.
As the owner, manager, barista, cleaner, gardener, and full-time shopkeeper, Emre is hands-on with every aspect of the cafe. After graduating, he spent years working as a DJ and bartender at chain venues. In 2019, he took over the operation of Rod Cafe to gain experience, and eventually transformed it into what is now a true espresso bar focused on quality coffee. You’ll often find Emre carefully polishing the marble counter or fully focused behind the bar, crafting each cup with care.

His passion for music, rooted in his DJ days, continues today. The carefully curated playlists you hear at 23 Society are a reflection of his love for discovering new artists and matching the perfect sound to your coffee moment.

The architectural transformation of the space, the visual identity, menu design, social media and website were all created by Emre’s wife, Ece Uzlu — a user experience designer and graduate of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. On weekends, you’ll find Ece at the cafe, chatting with customers, sharing books, or standing behind the bar with Emre, discussing coffee and Istanbul with curious tourists.
